Chamber Member Academy of Fencing Masters, believes the art of fencing trains the body and mind by teaching agility, skill and power. CEO Irina Chirashnya shares more about the philosophy of Academy of Fencing Masters in this Member Spotlight.
Fencing is a unique sport that combines great benefits such as athleticism, agility, coordination, healthy lifestyle, discipline, focus, mental sharpness and toughness. The Academy of Fencing Masters in Campbell was founded three years ago by husband and wife team, Igor and Irina Chirashnya. Their goal is to offer top-notch training in the niche sport of fencing as well as instilling critical life skills to their students.
They decided to open their academy because, although Igor was a competitive fencer and their twins both loved the sport, there was no place for them to train. According to Irina, they chose Campbell because it “is one of the best communities, a small charming town with unique atmosphere, location and vibe. The strong family orientation and values as well as its European style captured my heart.”
Continues Irina, “Shortly after opening our doors to customers, I met Mike Stonehouse, who was so enthusiastic about the Campbell Chamber of Commerce, that I had no doubt I want to join this great group of people to be connected with other businesses.”
With their dream to make the niche sport of fencing to the forefront in the US, Irina, Igor and their staff strive to help build a community around the sport, opening up a lot of possibilities and opportunities to people of all ages, especially children.
The Academy of Fencing Masters had made great strides in three short years.
Here are some highlights of a couple of last months:
Recently four fencers from AFM represented Team USA at the Pan-American Youth and Veteran Championship in Puerto Rico. All 4 brought home medals. Igor and Irina’s son, Adam, won gold, becoming the Pan-American Youth Champion of 2016 (in foil) while the other three fencers came back with silver medals!
In addition, this year AFM got a special award from the United States Fencing Association (USFA). Only 5 clubs in the US out of 600 got the honor of being named “USFA Club of Excellence“. The Academy of fencing Masters is proud to be one of them.
AFM also received the “Best Fencing Clubs 2015-2016″ award from the National Fencing Clubs Ranking, including being ranked # 1 in California Youth Women’s Epee Podium Medal Points, # 2 Youth Women’s Epee Top 8 Medal Points Nation wide!!! and # 4 in California Youth Men’s Epee Top 16 Placement Points
Though they are very proud of their growing local fencing club, the best achievement is the privilege to help so many kids and their families change their lives.
AFM helps their young students build strength on a variety levels. How many sports do you know that can give your child a physical and mental challenge while building their confidence, social skills, and academic future? This is exactly what fencing can do for people of all ages. This is what inspires Irina, Igor and their staff every day in their work.
